This moderate 6.5 km hiking tour will take you through the magnificence of Paruna sanctuary.  The sanctuary is in the Darling Range, and sits on the western margin of the ‘Yilgarn Block’, an ancient granite landform that formed over 2.5 billion years ago. The scenic Avon Valley, where Paruna is located, was carved out by the Avon River over thousands of years. The sanctuary itself is characterised by extremely steep slopes, numerous streams and creeklines, and areas of exposed granite.

The 2,000 hectare property predominantly follows the southern banks of the Avon River. The Numbat trail makes its way through King Jarrah and Marri forrest, over to the Paruna gorge, and along the steep slopes, so expect lots of stairs.  This hike is not for the faint hearted! This detailed and well maintained trail will surely provide all hikers with a spectacular and challenging hiking experience.

MEETING POINT AND GETTING THERE:

Head up Toodyay road and turn left onto From  O'Brien Rd.  Drive for 17kms where you will reach Avon Road, and turn left. This turn is 2.3km after Ewing Road. Paruna Sanctuary is signposted and down a gravel track to the carpark. You will need to open the first gate to drive through to the main carpark and meet your hike leaders for check in.


TRAIL DIFFICULTY:

Considered a ORANGE trail, this will test your fitness, endurance, and strength. With some moderate to large climbs, a moderate level of fitness is recommended for this hike, however it is a great place to start a climbing based hike.


WHAT TO WEAR & BRING:

  • Bring plenty of water ( at least 2 litres per person)

  • Comfortable clothes and sturdy trainers or hiking boots. With the uneven gravel trail at times, good grip soles are advised.

  • If you have hiking sticks, please bring them ( although not essential!)

  • Personal First Aid kit 

  • Snacks / morning tea to enjoy along the way. (Please bring reusable containers and water bottles)

  • Camera to snap some great photos fo your hike

UNDERSTANDING THE GRADES:

This hike is considered grade three and is recommended for those with a moderate level of fitness. This trail is filled with steps, and a lot of up and downhill sections.
